What is the treatment for TMJ?

What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is a condition that affects the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles. It is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. TMJ disorder can cause a variety of symptoms, including pain, stiffness, and difficulty opening and closing the mouth.

There are many possible causes of TMJ disorder, including injury to the jaw, misaligned teeth, arthritis, and stress. TMJ disorder can also be caused by habits such as grinding or clenching the teeth.

If you are experiencing TMJ pain or other symptoms, it is important to seek a proper diagnosis and treatment from a dental professional. A thorough dental examination is necessary to determine the appropriate TMJ treatment plan. Only a dental professional with Neuromuscular Dentistry experience can provide you with reliable information or a conclusive diagnosis.

What can I expect from TMJ treatment?

Once a proper diagnosis has been made, treatment for TMJ disorder can begin. At Deldar Dental, we generally follow a two-phase treatment approach.

What is TMJ treatment phase 1?

In phase 1, we place a removable, custom-made oral appliance in your mouth (24/7 usage) to gradually improve the alignment of your bite. We will monitor and measure your jaw activity, position, and function, and make orthotic adjustments frequently to utilize ongoing improvement and diminish TMJ pain.

The custom-made oral appliance is designed to relieve stress and tension on the jaw muscles, and help to reposition the jaw to a more comfortable and healthy position. The appliance is made to fit comfortably over the teeth and is worn for a certain amount of time each day.

What is TMJ treatment phase 2?

In phase 2, we schedule ongoing appointments to monitor, measure, and adjust the orthotic to further improve jaw activity, position, and function. Depending on your individual needs, we may also recommend directed orthodontics (braces) to shift your teeth to the ideal position as quickly as possible. In some cases, reconstruction of the teeth/bite may be necessary to realign and rebalance the bite, which can significantly reduce TMJ pain.

NOTE: Everyone’s treatment profile will vary.

It’s important to note that each person’s treatment profile will vary, and it may take several months or even years to see significant improvement in your TMJ symptoms. However, with proper treatment, many patients are able to achieve long-term relief from TMJ pain and other symptoms.

TMJ Treatment FAQ's

Will TMJ treatment stop my TMJ symptoms?

As with all medical treatments, results will vary. But in most cases, realigning the bite has a significant positive effect on TMJ pain and symptoms.

Before TMJ treatment, what can I do to alleviate TMJ pain?

  • Eat soft foods and avoid biting excessively
  • Chew with both sides of your mouth
  • Avoid opening your mouth wider than it feels comfortable
  • Apply moist heat up to four times a day for five to 10 minutes
  • Apply cold compresses at the same rate/frequency as heat
  • Massage the sore jaw joint(s) gently, using a rotating motion, for five to 10 seconds, then open the mouth and hold for another five to 10 seconds to stretch the chewing muscles that surround the joint, and repeat throughout the day
